Summary: A voluntary society of the Anglican Church which cares for the spiritual and practical welfare of seafarers in over 230 ports around the world. Through a network of full-time chaplains and staff in major ports, and part-time chaplains in others, the society visits seafarers onboard their ships or in hospital, and offers friendship, practical and spiritual support and help in emergencies. As part of the Anglican Church, its chaplains can liaise with the clergy in inland parishes to provide a link between seafarers and their families in times of crisis and distress. The society also runs centres in over 100 major ports around the world where seafarers can relax away from their ships and meet local people.
Services offered include telephone and email facilities, chapel, shop, DVD and book exchanges, local information, recreational facilities, transport to and from ships, counselling and advice. The facilities provided at each centre, many of which are operated in partnership with societies of other denominations, are listed in the Mission to Seafarers Directory and in the handbook of the ICMA of which The Mission to Seafarers is a member. Publications: Flying Angel News, a three times a year newspaper of the society; The Sea, a bi-monthly newspaper for seafarers; the Directory, containing annual details of the worldwide network.
Note/Restrictions: No minimum length of service, no restrictions based on nationality, religion, sexuality gender or age. Formally known as The Missions to Seamen.
